ACA Health Insurance For Individuals and Families.

Individual and Family Coverage

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), created a marketplace where individuals and families can shop for health insurance. If you don’t get coverage through an employer, this is where you can find it.

Part ABC helps individuals and families compare health plans and find coverage that fits your budget.

What ACA Plans Cover

Every ACA plan covers a set of essential health benefits: preventive care, prescriptions, maternity, mental health, and more. They always cover pre-existing conditions. No one can be denied or charged more for being sick.

How the Metal Tiers Work

ACA plans come in tiers (shown below): Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Lower tiers (Bronze) mean lower monthly premiums but higher costs when you use care; higher tiers (Gold/Platinum) flip that. The right tier depends on how much care you expect to use. We'll help you weigh it.

You May Qualify For Savings

Most households qualify for premium tax credits that lower your monthly cost. Even households earning over $100K can sometimes get reduced premiums. Many people are surprised how affordable a plan can be once subsidies are applied.

How You Can Enroll In ACA

Open Enrollment runs each fall into mid-January. Outside that window, a life event ie. losing job coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby, can open a Special Enrollment Period. We'll help you confirm your window.

ACA Plan Levels (“Metal Tiers”)

All ACA marketplace plans include the same essential health benefits. The difference is how you and the insurance company split costs:

Bronze 🥉

  • Lowest monthly premium

  • Highest deductibles & out of pocket costs

  • Good if you’re healthy, rarely use care, and want protection mainly for worst case scenarios

    • “I want the cheapest option, just in case something big happens.”

Silver 🥈

  • Moderate premiums

  • Moderate deductibles/out of pocket

  • Unlocks Cost Sharing Reductions (CSR) for those who qualify

    • “Balanced choice, not too expensive, not too risky. Best if I qualify for extra savings.”

Gold 🏅

  • Higher premiums

  • Low deductibles & out of pocket costs

  • Great if you see doctors regularly or take prescriptions

    • “I’d rather pay more each month and less when I need care.”

Platinum 💎

  • Highest monthly premiums

  • Lowest out-of-pocket costs

  • Ideal for frequent healthcare users

    • “I want nearly everything covered when I walk into a doctor’s office.”

How ACA Subsidies Work.

One of the biggest benefits of ACA plans is the premium tax credit (subsidy), which can reduce your premium.

How it works

  • A “benchmark” Silver plan is set in your area.

  • The government caps what % of income you’re expected to pay.

  • If the benchmark plan costs more, the subsidy covers the difference.

  • Subsidies can be applied to any metal tier.

Example

  • Family of 3, household income: $55,000/year

  • Benchmark Silver plan: $1,500/month

  • Expected contribution: $400/month

  • Subsidy: $1,100/month

  • Final cost: $400/month instead of $1,500

Key Things to Know About ACA Health Insurance

  • Subsidies adjust if your income changes. Be sure to update your Marketplace info.

  • Subsidies reconcile at tax time (you may owe or get more back).

  • Even households making $100,000 or more can still qualify.

    • Bottom line: ACA subsidies make coverage far more affordable than most people expect. We’ll run the numbers for you so there are no surprises.
