What Is LIS?

LIS stands for Low Income Subsidy. Most people hear it called Extra Help. Both names mean the same thing. LIS is a Medicare program that helps people pay for prescription drugs. It lowers drug premiums. It lowers copays. It protects people from big pharmacy bills. If drug costs feel unpredictable or stressful, this program exists for that reason.

LIS applies only to Medicare prescription drug coverage. That means Part D plans and Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage. It helps in a few key ways. Monthly drug plan premiums drop or disappear. Copays at the pharmacy drop to small set amounts. The coverage gap stops being a problem. The goal is simple. Make medications affordable and consistent month to month.

LIS is based on income and resources. It is designed for people with limited income and savings. You do not need to be on Medicaid to qualify. Many people qualify for LIS even if they do not qualify for other assistance programs. Social Security looks at income and certain assets like cash and savings. Not everything counts. Your home and car usually do not count. People often assume they earn too much. Many of them are wrong.

You must have Medicare to use LIS. Once approved, LIS attaches to your drug coverage. If you already have a drug plan, LIS adjusts your costs automatically. If you do not have a drug plan, Medicare enrolls you in one unless you choose your own. You still get prescriptions the same way. The price at the counter changes.

With LIS, pharmacy visits feel different. Copays become predictable. Often just a few dollars. Expensive medications no longer cause sticker shock. You do not bounce between high cost phases during the year. For many people, this is the first time prescriptions feel manageable.

You apply through Social Security. The application can be done online, by phone, or in person. The form asks about income and resources. It does not ask about medical conditions. Approval notices come from Social Security. Once approved, Medicare and the drug plan update automatically.

Many people do not know LIS exists. Others assume they earn too much. Some think it only applies to Medicaid. Some people qualify automatically through other programs. Others must apply directly. Missing LIS means paying more than necessary for the same medications.

LIS does not cover medical visits. It does not cover hospital care. It does not replace Medicare. It focuses only on prescription drugs. That focus is intentional. It also does not lock you into a specific plan forever. You still have plan choice flexibility.

LIS or Extra Help is a Medicare program that lowers prescription drug costs for people with limited income and resources. It reduces premiums. It reduces copays. It removes uncertainty at the pharmacy. For people who qualify, LIS quietly becomes one of the most valuable parts of Medicare.
