What is D-SNP?

TL:DR (AKA Too Long, Didn’t Read. As the kids say!)

  • D-SNP (Dual Special Needs Program), need to have both Part A & B, Original Medicare, and qualify for Medicaid at some level.

  • Usually (not always) what the commercials are talking about when they mention qualifying for food.

  • Can get a Medicare Advantage (Part C) to go with the D-SNP, which can include a monthly allowance to be used for things like rent, bills, food, etc..

D-SNP, or Dual Special Needs Program is when a Medicare beneficiary also qualifies for Medicaid. Meaning you have Original Medicare (Part A & B), as well as some level of Medicaid. Once you have these pieces of the puzzle you can then get a Medicare Advantage plan that is known as a D-SNP (pronounced D Snip). D-SNP plans usually have everything of a traditional Medicare Advantage plan, along with many other features. These features can include: dental, vision, hearing, prescription drug, gym membership, flex spending card to be used on everyday items, etc…

If you do not qualify for Medicaid any longer, but are still eligible for Medicare, you lose the ability to be on a D-SNP and will have to get into a Medicare Advantage plan. You can lose access to this program any time, as it is based on your income.

The quickest way to see if you qualify for Medicaid is to contact the local Medicaid office, usually the Department of Human Services and/or Health, County Assistance Office, Social Services Office. You can also look online for more info.

FYI Any brokerage or broker you speak with will not have access or ability to help with Government assistance such as Medicaid, along with any of the other programs.
